AI video platform: build it, rent one or have it built?
Three ways to get AI video software for your business, and what each costs you in time, money and control.

You have customers who need video: agents who need listing videos, members who need content every day, users who would pay to make clips without leaving your product. You want to sell them AI video under your own name. There are three ways to get there, and they suit different businesses.
Option 1: Build it in-house
You hire developers and build your own platform from scratch.
What you get: exactly what you specify, and complete ownership.
What it costs: months before the first customer pays, and a bill measured in developer time. The video part is the visible bit. Behind it sits the work that decides whether the business makes money: plans and payments, a credit system, refunds when a video fails, retries when one stalls, emails, an admin, and a way to see what each video costs you. Every one of those has to be designed, built and debugged before launch.
The real risk: most of that plumbing is only tested for real once paying customers use it. A first version tends to find its billing mistakes with real money.
Best for: companies with a product team already, and a video feature so central that they want to own every line of it.
Option 2: Rent an off-the-shelf tool
Some AI video tools let you put your logo on their app and resell access.
What you get: speed. You can be selling in days, for a monthly fee.
What it costs: control. The formats are whatever the tool offers to everyone, so your customers get the same videos as everyone else's customers. Pricing is boxed in by their pricing. Your customers' accounts and data usually live in their system, and if the tool changes direction, raises prices or shuts down, your product goes with it.
Best for: testing whether there is demand at all, before you invest.
Option 3: Have it built by someone who already runs one
The middle route: a studio that already runs an AI video platform builds yours, with video formats made for your niche, on your own accounts.
What you get: your own platform, built by someone who has already made the expensive mistakes on their own product. You own the name, the domain, the customers and the payments.
What it costs: a fixed build fee, and optionally a monthly fee for someone to keep it running as video models change.
Best for: businesses with an audience or customer base who want their own product in weeks, not quarters, and do not have a product team to maintain it.
The three side by side
| Build in-house | Rent a tool | Have it built | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first sale | Months | Days | Weeks |
| Up-front cost | Highest | Lowest | Fixed fee |
| Video formats | Anything you specify | Same as everyone | Made for your niche |
| Your name on everything | Yes | Partly | Yes |
| You own customers and payments | Yes | Often not | Yes |
| The builder already runs a video platform | Rarely | Yes, their own | Yes |
Questions to ask whoever builds it
Whichever route you take, these questions separate a platform that makes money from one that only makes videos:
- What happens when a video fails? Look for automatic refunds of the customer's credits, not a support form.
- How is a video priced? Credits per video, with your margin set in advance, protect you from your heaviest users.
- Can you see what each video costs? If the answer is a spreadsheet you build yourself, keep asking.
- Who handles model changes? Video models are updated and retired often. Somebody has to keep up.
- Whose accounts does it run on? If it is not yours, you do not fully own the business.
- Can you see one running for real? Ask for a live platform with paying customers, not a demo.
Where we fit
We built Scripts Viral, an AI video platform for TikTok Shop sellers, and we run it every day. Picturewright is option 3: we build it for your business, on your own accounts, to work and to sell. Every build is quoted after a call, at a fixed price agreed before work starts.
If you are weighing these options, get in touch. If building it yourself is the better choice for you, we will say so.
